Coding Class
A free online coding class for students from first grade through middle school.

The Coding Class began as a free coding camp for children stuck at home during the COVID-19 quarantine. Our volunteer teachers taught for a week to first- through seventh-graders. We hoped for a few dozen students. 680 registered, and 29 Voice of Calling teachers volunteered to teach them.
Classes ran on Fridays, on weekends, and some weeks every day. Each one lasted an hour and aimed at a different skill level and topic. Some students took one class a day; others took four. Some learned on their own, and some brought a parent along.
The camp became a regular thing. Season after season we have run a free online coding camp, in Scratch for younger students and Python for older ones.
A student we remember
One student had difficulty reading and speaking over Zoom. His teacher didn’t give up on him. She taught him through free private lessons, and it wasn’t easy. The teacher, the student and his mother kept at it. After watching her son’s progress for five days, his mother called her the most patient and skillful teacher she had ever met.
Who teaches
Our teachers are Voice of Calling student volunteers. We are building the Open Learning Hub so that every teacher, in every season and every branch, can follow the same clear lesson plans.
