Voice of Dream

An in-person coding and robotics camp for children from underserved communities.

Volunteers and children gathered around laptops at the first Voice of Dream camp in 2019

Voice of Dream is our in-person camp. Over three days, high-school volunteers teach coding and robotics to children who have had little access to computer education, including foster children.

Season 1: Thanksgiving week, 2019

The first camp had to be built from scratch. The team gathered materials to build a robot, practiced teaching in front of each other, and salvaged used computers from different places. They made T-shirts, a poster and the registration forms, while a 3D printer kept turning out Minecraft figures as small gifts for the children.

The morning of the camp, everyone was nervous. What if the computers break? What if no one pays attention? What if no one shows up? Then the first student walked in, and then all 16 registered children arrived, one after another. Every volunteer took their place.

Each child came with their own strengths and weaknesses. Each day, every child left with a smile. On the last day we held a Robotics Olympics where teachers, students and even parents played together.

At the start of the camp we asked each child: What is your dream? On day one, one child said he wanted to work at an Apple Store. When we asked again at the end, he added that he now wanted to be a computer programmer.

Seasons 2 and 3

Voice of Dream came back in July 2023 and again in July 2024, each time for three days, with robots, a competition arena and a new team of volunteers.

Why we do it

The volunteers learn as much as the campers. As one of them wrote after the first camp, it made her see how much she had taken for granted, and it made her want to bring the same chance to children around the world.

“We were all there collaboratively to not only teach but to learn a new experience for ourselves.”
